In tribute to International Women’s Day, my first blog will honour women around the world. I’m offering some practical knowledge I’ve gained over the last few years of working in nutritional therapy.
Period pain should not be part of our monthly reminder that we are ovulating. Pain is our body signalling an imbalance. The same can be said for acne, PCOS, endometriosis and menopause.
Each woman is unique therefore there is no one-size-fits-all with these conditions however there are a few daily practices which can help to reduce the symptoms and work towards eliminating pain.
Here are 7 practices to incorporate into your daily routine:
1. Sleep – aim for 7-8 hours per night – prioritise your sleep to help balance hormones.
2. Physical activity – this doesn’t have to be at the gym, it’s important to keep active, throughout the day so try some walking, dancing around your desk or kitchen or any other physical activity which you find enjoyable. I enjoy a little dance while I cook and long walks with my dog.
3. Get some fresh air and sun when possible – this can lift your spirit when you feel overwhelmed. Sunlight also helps to regulate our circadian rhythm for deeper sleep.
4. Drink 2 litres of filtered water per day - herbal teas can help you achieve the 2-litre intake. Water will keep the body hydrated and help with eliminating toxins from the body.
5. Eat lots of vegetables – vegetables give us fibre, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants which are needed by the body daily. Cruciferous veggies are especially beneficial for toxin elimination.
6. Avoid processed foods as these cause inflammation in the body leading to damage of the cells, tissue and organs.
7. Reduce stress – this is the hardest one for me and it is equally as important as all the above. I have not mastered the elimination of stress but find meditation, yoga or listening to binaural beats helps to slow down my mind.
